How it works
The DSL satellite internet service connects your computer to the Internet with a high-speed connection via the satellite.
The DSL satellite broadband equipment connects your home or small office at speeds much faster than dial-up, indeed file transfer speeds can be as much as 64 times faster than dial-up, and 7 times faster than many ADSL (fixed line broadband) connections. A single satellite minidish and a modem are all you need.
The Internet
If you’re still using dial-up, we’re sure we won’t need to sell you on the benefits of satellite broadband. If you’re new to the web, accessing the internet at high-speed opens up a world of information, feature rich content and entertainment. You’ll be able to surf the internet at lightning-fast speeds, download music and films, share photos with friends and family, and so much more.
DSL satellite internet– beyond your dish
DSL Telecom has been working for 10 years to deliver a brilliant satellite broadband service at a truly affordable price.
The system we are currently using has been extremely successful in North America with over 400,000 subscribers on the hardware.
Also
• For dedicated two-way communications, spot beam technology allows extensive frequency reuse, effectively lowering the cost of the spectrum
• The larger amount of available bandwidth supports higher transmission rates, supporting higher peak speeds for individual subscribers
• The blanket licensing requirements for subscriber premises equipment can be more easily met with low cost subscriber terminals
The Satellites
DSL satellite currently operates on Eutelsat’s Eurobird 3 satellite at 33° East. This is a state of the art communications satellite in geostationary orbit about 36,000 Kms above the equator.
DSL satellite technology allows us to modify various parameters of the earth-to-space signals on an individual user basis so as to adapt in real time to each user’s situation, which may change due to weather and other factors. This all happens automatically.
At one time heavy rain was thought to be a potential barrier to successful deployment of small satellite systems. Indeed, the reduction of signal level is so important that it was originally difficult to guarantee a high-quality service.
We have included in the DSL satellite internet service, satellite air interface technology that mitigates rain fade. The hardware at your site automatically responds to rain fade with uplink power control and adaptive data coding techniques (Adaptive Coding and Modulation – ACM) that overcome potential outages, while optimising the use of satellite transponder bandwidth. This gives the network higher reliability compared to other two-way consumer satellite services offered in Europe.
The service connects to the main internet backbone at the satellite earth station via state of the art fibre technology.
The dish
The DSL satellite internet mini-dish both receives signals from the satellite, and sends signals from the customer up to the satellite, using the latest microwave receive and transmit technologies.
We offer a small, efficient minidish which can be mounted on a roof, wall or via pole mount in the ground.
The Modem
The DSL satellite modem is required to connect one or more customer PCs to the network. We use standardised modem technology based on the DOCSIS cable modem standards to offer a low-cost, small satellite modem via a straightforward RJ45 connection.
Your PC
Connected via Ethernet to the DSL satellite modem, your PC will have high-speed Internet access, whether in your home or in your small office. You may connect your PC directly to your DSL satellite modem with an Ethernet cable, or you can attach a wireless switch or router to your modem and connect wirelessly (using the popular 802.11 standards for example). We suggest that you have up-to-date anti-virus software on your PC, and a software or hardware firewall to prevent unauthorised access to your data.
The installation
The system will be installed by a certified engineer. The dish will be fitted to a suitable outside wall and the wiring will be run to the DSL satellite modem inside the property. The engineer will then set the system up. Professional installation of the equipment in the UK will take approximately 2-3 hours.
The limitations
The signal in a satellite system has further to go than it does with standard broadband. Resultantly there is a very slight delay (usually about half a second). This makes no difference in the case of internet surfing etc., is hardly noticeable for internet telephony or video calls but makes some online gaming impossible.
How to get it
Telephone or email us and we will take care of everything. It doesn't matter whether you are an expert computer user or a novice. We really do make it easy.
